NBC News Allots Half Of Its Nightly Newscast To Night of Gun Violence

Instead of focusing its gun violence coverage on mass shootings, as many news organizations do, NBC News devoted about half of its nightly news program on Sunday to the wide range of shootings that take place daily across the U.S. Correspondents Kate Snow, Gabe Gutierrez, Gadi Schwartz and Jesse Kirsch were embedded with police, hospitals and community activists a they tried to deal with violence in their areas this past Saturday, showing what NBC said "just how regular, and pervasive, gun violence is."

While mass shootings get nationwide attention, “far more Americans are killed in smaller incidents” across the U.S., said anchor Kate Snow. NBC said the program captured "how gun violence is destroying communities and plaguing our country.” The project took several months to plan and produce, with extra personnel brought in to meet the deadline, producer Matt Frucci told Deadline. He called the project “one of the more challenging things I’ve had to do in my career, because it is both the logistics of getting the footage overnight, so we had to get the teams out into the field, we had to make sure they were doing it safely.”
