D.C., NYC Police Investigate Shootings Of Homeless People

Police said they are investigating a series of homicides targeting homeless people in Washington, D.C. and New York City, according to the Washington Post. An assailant shot three people, two in New York City. One victim from each city has died. Police said a man had walked up to two homeless men sleeping on the street and shot them. Evidence points to the crimes in the two cities being committed by the same person.

The shootings coincide with rising urban gun violence. New York Mayor Eric Adams called the incidents "horrific." He and Washington Mayor Muriel Bower said in a joint statemen: “The rise in gun violence has shaken all of us and it is particularly horrible to know that someone is out there deliberately doing harm to an already vulnerable population. As our law enforcement agencies work quickly with federal partners to locate the suspect, we are also calling on unsheltered residents to seek shelter."
