Program Description

Byrne JAG funds support a law enforcement training series held by the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC). Their Drug Enforcement Training Program offers advanced specialized training in drug enforcement investigations, school resource officer, community-oriented policing, and Spanish language. In addition, GPSTC provides a Georgia Clandestine Laboratory Investigation/Safety Certification program and Crisis Intervention Team Certification training, which are imperative trainings for all specialized investigators.

Program Description

In Georgia, Byrne JAG funds support a state residential substance abuse treatment (RSAT) program at Coastal State Prison. Coastal’s RSAT program diverts qualifying offenders sentenced to two years or less of prison time to three and six-month residential substance abuse treatment programs, followed by community supervision and aftercare.

Program Description

Byrne JAG funds support seventeen multi-jurisdictional drug task forces whose overarching goals are to 1) disrupt illicit drug markets by investigating drug distributors and/or drug trafficking organizations, 2) broaden awareness as to the trends, threats, myths and consequences associated with illegal drug use, and 3) participate in the local drug enforcement strategy through law enforcement intervention with drug abusers. Each task force is overseen by a local control board comprised of law enforcement and prosecution representatives. The task forces are committed to addressing and decreasing the current level of drug-related crime within Georgia.

Program Description

Byrne JAG funds provide support for the Greater Hardin County’s Narcotics Task Force (GHCNTF). GHCNTF is a multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional police narcotics operation, formed in 1995, that investigates, arrests and prosecutes individuals or organizations trafficking illegal controlled substances or diverted pharmaceutical drugs in Hardin, Hart, Nelson, Grayson and Larue Counties. The proj­ect brings together the resources of 10 city, county, state and federal agencies with the common goal of targeting mid to upper level drug dealers.

Program Description

Byrne JAG fund support a project to improve language access in the courts through the translation of key court documents into 14 different languages. The effort also helps to screen and test translators for proficiency and provides them with practice tools for improvement.

The primary function of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team is the eradication and investigation of mid- to major-level illegal marijuana grows. The unit not only focuses on eradication, but on the development of cases for successful prosecution, seizing illegally gained assets, and assisting natural resource agencies with identifying environmental damages caused by this illegal activity.

Program Description

The Breaking Chains Academy of Development, Inc., addresses gang prevention efforts in Canyon County by providing youth who are at-risk of gang involvement with alternatives to a gang lifestyle. Services include tutoring to obtain a high school diploma or GED, job training skills through internships, and recreational activities. The project also includes a drug use prevention strategy which focuses on deterring first time users and provides drug and/or alcohol treatment for participants.
