An off-duty police officer from a suburban Rochester, N.Y., department killed herself after shooting two women, one fatally, according to Rochester police. The apparent murder-suicide was the second such crime committed by an area cop in the past eight months, the Democrat & Chronicle reports.
The body of Officer Tiffani Gatson, 29, a member of the police department in the suburban town of Greece, was found in the home with her two victims and with a 9 mm handgun that was not her service weapon. Gatson joined the Greece Police Department in 2018 as its first African-American woman on the force. She briefly worked for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in the county jail before she was hired in Greece. In March, off-duty Rochester Police Department Sgt. Melvin Williams shot a 35-year-old 911 dispatcher inside her home before he killed himself in his car several hours later. Rochester is currently on pace to top its record-setting 81 homicides in 2021, which gave the city of about 200,000 the fifth-highest homicide rate in the nation.
