Professors Gary LaFree of the University of Maryland and Tom Tyler of Yale University were recognized as co-recipients of the Stockholm Prize in Criminology last week for their respective research on legitimacy and procedural justice in policing democracies. The prize winners' research indicates that if the police applying principles of treating citizens correctly, respectfully and without prejudice, including people who break the law, can lead to a reduction in the propensity for crime on an individual level and also to a reduction in crime on a societal level.
The Stockholm Prize in Criminology is an international honor in the field of criminology. The prize is awarded
for outstanding achievements in criminological research or for the application of research results by
practitioners for the reduction of crime and the advancement of human rights. Video recordings of the
awards ceremony and discussion concerning researchers’ advice on policy, the prize winners’
lecture, as well as the Jerry Lee Lecture by criminologist Alex R. Piquero of the University of Miami may be found here.
