Death Of Milwaukee Man Pinned By Hotel Security Ruled A Homicide

Crime and Justice News

The death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, a Black man who died after he was pinned to the ground by hotel security guards, was ruled a homicide by the Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office. Mitchell, 43, died in June of restraint asphyxia along with the effects of cocaine and methamphetamine, an autopsy found, noting that Mitchell was restrained by multiple people after he had used drugs, reports the Washington Post. The findings “demand immediate charges” against the security guards involved, said family attorney Ben Crump. Prosecutors have been awaiting the autopsy as they weigh possible charges. The medical examiner also noted that Mitchell had hypertensive cardiovascular disease and obesity.

Mitchell’s family believes he was suffering from a mental health episode when he went into the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee on June 30. He allegedly appeared frantic and attempted to hide in the lobby. Security guards began to drag him out of the hotel. Outside, four guards pinned him facedown on the concrete until police arrived. Video showed Mitchell crying for help and apologizing as the guards appeared to hold him down. Police and emergency responders tried to resuscitate Mitchell after they arrived, but he died at the scene. Hotel operator Aimbridge Hospitality fired employees after Mitchell’s death. The death drew comparisons to the 2020 killing of George Floyd, who was Black, by a White police officer who held Floyd down and knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. In the Mitchell case, his family and their lawyers said that Instead of helping him, hotel workers “used excessive force that inflicted injury resulting in death.”
