Policy: Racial
Disparity in the Criminal Justice System
The American principles of equal protection and equal
justice demand recognition that racial disparities exist throughout the
criminal justice system. Although some practices undertaken to
rectify racial disparities have met with limited success, much remains
to be done. Overrepresentation of victims of color and
underrepresentation of minority professionals employed within the system
present significant challenges. Criminal justice professionals at all
levels should strive to have the persons administering the system
reflect the populations that they serve, and should seek out effective
measures to reduce overrepresentation of minorities in the
system.
