Policy: Juvenile Crime and
the Prevention of Juvenile Crime
We recognize the
developmental differences between children and adults that come to the
attention of the justice system, and re-affirm and support the
principles of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of
2002 which address and protect the needs and rights of youth.
Juvenile crime prevention strategies should be based upon the national
public health approach emphasizing the application of research, science
and public education about risk factors and enhancing protective
factors. When properly implemented in communities, these
strategies should represent a comprehensive approach of strengthening
families, supporting core social institutions, strategic investments in
proven prevention strategies, and intervening effectively when
delinquency occurs. Adequate resources must be present for such programs
to succeed.
